Coumarin allergy

Hi, I have just been diagnosed with a coumarin allergy and like you am overwhelmed with the amount of food it is in. Are you able to give me any advice on what I can eat and any products that can be used? Can't believe there is not much information on this allergy out there and you are the only one I can find with this allergy, surely there must be more than 2 of us or are we on our own here
Thank you and I hope you have managed to control yours and your sons allergy

How does it affect you? It seems to be mostly anticoagulant in activity and toxic in the liver. Depending on the reactions there might be some help available - not say there is though.

Hi, thank you for the reply. If I use it on the skin then I come out in a rash all over and intense itching and if it is digested I get stomach ache. If I inhale it then I will start wheezing. All these symptoms are confusing me as I am not sure where I am being exposed to this ingredient as I am trying my best to avoid it which makes me think that products that coumarin naturally occurs in might be affecting me. Any help about coumarin would be appreciated. Thank you

Well, that does sound like an allergy. It is a question of avoiding the substance as far as possible for now and/or using antihistamines if you have a reaction.

Another way is to up your intake of vitamin C which made an enormous difference to my allergy status. You will need to start upping your intake to a level just below when it gives you a loose stool - this may be 3gms or it may be 5gms or whatever, in divided doses over the day, bringing your blood concentration of vitamin C right up which lowers your levels of histamine produced in the body. It is histamine which causes the itchiness and discomfort, which in turn is triggered by the contact/ingestion of the substance causing it. Worth a try anyway. You may be short of other vitamins or minerals which could be making matters worse.

There's some info . It would be worth seeing a registered Nutritional Therapist to help sort it out with you.

Wow, thank you so much for that information. Never thought of vitamin deficiency making things worse which makes sense because allergies can cause huge amounts of stress on the body. Will definitely look in to this and thank you for taking the time to reply 😀

Allergies frighten us so much because we think avoiding is the only way to manage them. Which is very arduous task in itself because not only it keeps you mentally engrossed in what to eat what to avoid, the fear of reaction, feeling out of control with choices as there is very little you can eat that hasn't got your trigger substance. Whatever one is allergic to that substance become ubiquitous, hard to avoid the bugger, it is everywhere!!The whole life is lived around allergy
In fact the allergic reactions that you get has got the cure hidden in it. You just need someone who could guide you to find that hidden cure
You may need some help but it is possible to be free of allergies.
I have had several people whose severe allergy was debilitating their day to day eating and life.
There is a gateway to freedom that opens, when you start believing there is a possibility of freedom.
Don't buy into it as if allergy is the all powerful enemy, who always wins. Most people treat their allergies as formidable enemy who always wins...just become aware of possibility that it does not have to be this way.
Staying open help arrives.
May balance be found

The skin issue has been going on for nearly 2 years but has slowly got worse until a couple of months a go my throat started to itch after eating certain foods followed by intense stomach pains. Finally got referred for patch testing which came back as limonene and coumarin. Found out about limonene but there seems to be not much information about coumarin.

I just wonder what might have happened to trigger the allergies. An allergy only happens after an initial sensitising event ...can you remember anything? Was anything significant going on in your life ?

HI, I was taking seaweed tablets for a year and am not sure if this has caused the allergy or stress as I was under a lot of stress at the time. I'm sure it's one of those two things.

My money is on the stress being a factor. But it could be worth checking out what was in your seaweed tablets. Why were you taking them?

Took them for overall health as was suffering from irritable bowl. Took them for about a year until the allergies started and it was only researching afterwards that I read you should only take them for a few months as they are high in iodine. They really should state that on the bottle they come in. Anyway, can't be sure that they did cause the allergy.
