Could anone recommend a lip balm. My 12 year old daughter seems to be allergic to all the ones we've tried recently. The skin around her lips flares up. The one that she used to use with no problems has been discontinued so if anyone has any suggestions we'd be very grateful.

I use Badger Balm unscented lip balm, and it's really rich and oily (good for gliding onto really sore lips, rather than trying to paste some really hard creamy stick onto them). It's predominantly castor oil and a few other nice ingredients. I'd fully recommend it, simply as there's no fragrance or flavours, and as far as I can tell you without looking at the packaging, nasties-free.

I use the the blue lypsyl or vaseline which are fine for me. Tempted to get some Badger Balm so will keep an eye out for that.

I am allergic to the red lypsyl which I didn't realise for a long time. My lips tingled and felt cold, I got tiny little blisters all around my mouth and started creeping up my nose. One of my supervisors asked if I was sniffing glue. Bless her!!

I use E45 Lipcare, which I find really good.

E45 Lipcare has been specially formulated to give you immediate, soothing relief from sore, cracked or chapped lips. The gentle, hypoallergenic formulation contains UVA and UVB sunscreens for added protection

I use the remnants of pure shea butter I bought months and months ago-if I remember correctly, it has a natural SPF -you might be able to get a lip blam version 🙂

I have been using Balm Balm Lip Balm with Tea Tree and I have to say I simply adore it. I love the consistency of it and the tea tree is not too overpowering and helps keep all those nasty winter germs at bay.

Here's their site.

Perhaps consider extra virgin coconut oil? Certainly tastes good, no added chemicals and works well to protect dry and irritated skin.

Hi Karen

Hope that with all those many replies the problem is gone now.

Just to suggest that I made my own with a mix of lovely shea butter and cocoa butter that smells delicious.

Best wishes

I love the organic brand Trilogy's lip balm - I don't have it on me so can't tell you the ingredients but might be worth a go 🙂

Not a lip balm, but may I suggest a supplement of vitamin B complex suitable for children? Cracked lips are a symptom of a deficiency of vitamins B2 and B6, and/or vitamin C and omega oils to help the skin. Also probiotic yoghurts, preferably plain, may help rebalance beneficial gut bacteria and improve immune function (hide it if necessary in home-made smoothies made with fesh fruit). Try this for a month, along with the balms suggested, and if it doesn't improve get the GP to check things out.

Hope it improves soon.

Hi, I thoroughly recommend just natural shea butter. I buy it on ebay and fill a lip balm tube and it is much better than the shop bought ones, and completely natural.

The quality and texture of shea butter varies though, try to go for a rich, unrefined, creamy shea butter if you can as it will moisturise much better than the refined version.

Hi All,
Thought I'd follow up and let you know that my daughters lips and skin are now back to normal. I think it all started when she began using some lip gloss which she was allergic too and when she put on vaseline it help soothe it it made it even worse!
Thank you very much for all your replies and advice. We tried the first two suggestions and they worked for her. Lots of your suggestions look great too so I will try them out in the future!

Perfect thanks! I found this in our local revital health shop and this worked marvelously for her. They only had the mint version and my daughter would have probably preferred the unscented or a fruit one instead but it worked so that is the main thing!

I am allergic to the red lypsyl which I didn't realise for a long time. My lips tingled and felt cold, I got tiny little blisters all around my mouth and started creeping up my nose. One of my supervisors asked if I was sniffing glue. Bless her!!

Thanks. Yes she was also allergic to the red lypsyl but the blue was fine!

I use E45 Lipcare, which I find really good.

Thanks will try this sometime.

This is a great suggestion. I love coconut oil and use it on my skin and for cooking. I can't believe I didn't think of trying that!

Try Bioticco lip balm. I use it all year around and my 10 year old daughter uses it too...I feel ok with her using it as it is all natural.
