Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to using a self tanning cream/bronzer?

I only ask as I used one last week and this is what happened.

Used Sunday night and woke at 2 am feeling horrendously sick, then had really bad diarrohea all day - sickness left me late Monday evening. Was OK Tuesday - used self tanner Tuesday night and felt sick before I got to bed - Wednesday again really bad diarrohea and feeling sick all day. Too much of a coincidence I think as I never used it any more and was fine.

Today I used Dove self tanner on my face and since using it (think with breathing in the smell may have something to do with it) I feel sick again, really bad headache - and again running to the toilet - is there something in it that could do this

Last week I used No. 7 bronzer and I have to admit I didn't like the smell.

Anyone help me on this?

Yes. My other half reacted badly to some Boots stuff she bought the other year. Now she uses some natural stuff... Dr Haushker (sp?) I think it is and she's ok with that.

She didn't react quite like yourself, but it did make her skin irritated. I'd hate to think what rubbish they put in those products.

Well I did use it on my arms, torso and legs so reckon I got a fair bit absorbed into my skin which I think is what happened and it's got into my system. If you think that a woman can use a hormone cream and have some effect from it by only rubbing a tiny amount into the skin well I guess the same can apply to something like the tanners/bronzers and I bet there are some unhealthy ingredients in these

Never heard of Dr. Hauscher - where did she get that from?

And I thought it was a bug or something I ate! I was very ill last week for 3 days and I had used a new tanning oil. It didnt say it was a self tan but I am convinced it has self tanning ingredients as it did work very well. I wouldnt use it again though as it smelt really horrible - I had to go and shower after a couple of hours. Also the first time I sprayed it was indoors and got some of it on a wooden table and it left marks which are still there. Next time I sprayed outdoors and there is still a mark on the concrete. I couldnt help thinking if it does that to wood and concrete what an earth does it do to your skin.

It would be interesting to see if anyone else can attribute any diarrohea and sickness attacks to the same thing. If felt fine otherwise and no one else has been ill with my symptoms.

She bought her stuff off the internet.

is the main site I think (can't check as I'm at work and internet access is somewhat restricted, esp. to shopping sites)

The other products she uses is Weleda which are also natural biodynamically grown ingredients.

Not sure which of those brands was the tanning cream but it's one of them.

Powerlily - must have been the tanning oil then? Did you look at the ingredients. I binned the No. 7 last week but wish I'd looked at what was in it now but Monday and Wednesday I felt terrible - especially Monday - I very rarely feel sick or have the runs but all day it lasted and again on Wednesday - part of the reason I used it again on Tuesday night was just to confirm my suspicions as to how I reacted on Monday and when it started again on Wednesday well that confirmed it. Exactly the same as Monday. The rest of the week I was fine. So do you think you've had a reaction to the oil. I know what you mean about some of them staining things.

Energylz - thanks for that will take a look on the internet - and she hasn't had any reactions to it - has she had any reactions to others apart from skin reactions?

She has sensitive skin anyway so always aims to go for natural stuff where she can, although occasionally gets tempted by something else, usually to find that it doesnt' suit her. Dr H, and Weleda things are completely natural as far as I'm aware and she's had no problems with them.

Thanks - Welede tends to be homeopathic so that should be fine. Think it's the only way we'll get a tan this year!

You are correct that Weleda do homeopathic medicines, but they also have their other range of products which are based on the Biodynamic plants that are grown in Derbyshire and also abroad specially by them for their own products. Whether that biodynamic planting and the products from them are also considered homeopathic is outside the scope of my knowledge, but I think there's a difference. 😉

Thanks I never knew Weleda did another range apart from homeopathy but I guess they'll be a lot safer to use than something a high street store sells.

Ok, I've actually remember to check with her what she is using.

I was wrong with both (although she does use Dr. H and Weleda products too).

The tanning cream is made by The Green People. ()
