Hello

I was wondering if anyone is / has or knows anyone who is addicted to the over the counter painkillers?

If so, I have some advice however no time to expand today but promise to post my addiction story very shortly.

Hi Kim I am so sorry for your loss - and I can understand why you feel as you do. But many people ARE helped by Solpadeine - and I can't see it being banned any time soon,

As a pharmacist I am WELL aware of the risks of addiction to some medicines that are available over the counter. Solpadeine, Co-codamol, and Codiene Lnctus are the main three. Indeed anything with codiene is potentially addictive.

It is a difficult line to tread tho. Why should people who use solpadeine responsibly and get relief from it be denied it because some get addicted? And that is the line patient groups take,

Drugs like Solpadieine are known as 'Pharmacy' medicines. they can be sold but only from a regsitered pharmacy and under the supervision of a pharmacist. At the moment those sorts of medicines cannot be on self selection. The person has to go and ask at the counter. It is proposed that in future under certain conditions this category of drugs will be allowed to be on self selection - something almost every Pharmacist I know is against precisely because we recognise the problems caused by some of these products.

I can't help thinking there will be more addicts if that is allowed to happen

Hello, I was one of the first on this thread and managed to beat my addiction nearly four years ago now but i come back time to time to see if i can help others and was outraged at this above post,
Firstly i think it should be removed with this person banned from the site. The person clearly has a vested interest as a pharmacist and her condecending comments to Kim who is clearly struggling are nothing short of outrageous.
You are entitled to your beliefs and as you have mentioned on numerous occasions you are in the know and trained so we "the real addicts" who have actually struggled to rebuild our lives after this addiction must have imagined all the hardship, but then why should all the people who haven't been addicted suffer right ? and i presume you know all these people are not harbouring an addiction secret and buying solpedieine in every chemist in a 10 mile radius like most of us where,
I am really appalled by your lack of tact and explanation that we must be pre disposed to addicition, HEalthypages i ask you for the sake of all the recovering addicts, and all the people here searching for help to remove this nasty person and her nasty comments,
they will NOT HELP which this forum was meant to do.
Kim i too hope they are banned like they should be, If you remember the wall high stacked packets of solpedeine in chemists you like me will disregard a pharmacists comments who clealy has a vested interest,
If you would like any real advice from someone who actually knows what your going through feel free to PM.

I really hope this last condecending post hasn't put anyone off adding to this thread,
I myself was one of the first on the thread and with peoples support i managed to beat my addiction, and managed to help others too like i hope i do with this post.
I asked the last post be removed as i don't think a pharmacist with a vested interest should be preaching to anyone about the benefits os solpadeine helping people,
It certaintly didnt help me thats for sure.
If anyone would like real help and real advice feel free to send me a private message.
Or indeed if anyone agrees with me maybe just ignore the previous posters posts.

Regards

and best of luck

Where to start?

Thank God for the internet as I would have felt alone with this forever I know. I have been addicted to Solpadeine Plus for15 years.I went to my Drs 3 years ago and confessed to my Partner and my family. All were shocked but supportive and they think I kicked the habit(the Dr advised to taper off after checking my liver wasn't shot, which it wasn't). I tried but didn't and rather that than worry them I now "fix" in secret. I am taking 20-30 tabs per day plus approx 6 cocodimal from my docs 30/500 per day for a compressed disc- I don't even know if they work any more.
I started as they were in the med cabinet at work when I had a headache. A great fix at the time and I proceeded to top them up as I took them. Being a recovered alcoholic I recognise the symptoms of my addiction. Taking in secret, hiding around the house, the office, discarding empties in bins when out and buying from different chemists.I actually unwrap every tab from a 32 box to put in my handbag before coming home, quite sad really.
I have 23 solps and 38 c.c left and intend to wean off so that when finished I will not replemish. This is not recommended for alcohol but having read the side effects for this mis-use I am unsure if I could function in my job with the withdrawals, ironically admin based in a Drs surgery. My own Dr was horrified when I suggested c/t last time.
I can't afford this addiction health ,monetary or sanity wise any more and feel I am cheating my loved ones which brings tears to my eyes as I type it.
I hope to keep reading the posts on here as they are so inspirational and honest and so familiar in circumstance to my own in many cases.
I don't think I can share this with my family or Partner again. He works away sometimes and is home tomorrow . I am also back in work tomorrow after a week off so hoping a combination of the 2 will help.
I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to share this and hope it is the start of recovery from a long term easily found addiction.
One member posted that as well as w/d ,OCD,restless legs, the runs, headache, backache etc she wasn't sure how she as a person was going to be at the end as she felt she had been living a split personality, which is exactly how I feel.
I hope for a better future even at 51, life can begin again.
Thank you for being here.

Do NOT be ashamed of yourself. be proud of the fact that you have recognised you have a problem. Be proud of the fact you had the courage to post here...and believe you CAN beat your addiction....because I KNOW you can.. Yes you need some help -but see if your local pharmacist can signpost you to local services. Or be honest and talk to your GP.

Good luck

I don't know what techniques if any you have tried to help you Billy but it would be worth checking out the Emotional freedom technique. You can find videos on line. It is sometimes called the tapping technique and it looks bonkers!! However it can be very helpful in reducing cravings for anything.

Good luck. Believe you can do it . Forgive yourself if you slip up, You only fail when you stop trying....

I popped back to see how you all were getting on and it is good to see that some of you are making good progress. I just wanted to mention that I suffer from restless legs like some of you and I found "Arnicare" gel to be amazing at calming my legs down. Keep up the support and well done for your successes.

Solpadeine Max contains paracetamol, the breakdown of paracetamol uses some of the same biochemical pathways as alcohol. Taking it with alcohol can lead to the production of toxic by products.
Though it should not be a problem unless you have impaired liver function.
