Quite simply - for the ex-smokers out there, which method did you think was the most effective?

RE: Cigarettes - how did you quit?

Coming up on 2 years ago now, I used the cold turkey method to quit (off and on throughout my life, then for 12 solid years 1-2 packs a day).I wouldread about quitting too, usingeducational materials to support my quit. I began an exercise program, drank lots of water, started taking vitamins (especially C and the mega-Bs) I think the biggest factor to my success was the online support during the first crucial months at ivequit.com, where I met Annie, Fafinka and others. They were always there for me, oh the rants that went on! The horror stories on whyquit.com were instrumental in keeping me convinced not to smoke as well.

My husband (25 years, 1-2 packs a day) smokedaround me daily throughout my quit by the way, as did my mother when she would come over which was about 3 nights a week. I am so pleased to say he has quit using shots. It is going on 2 months for him now! This is a relatively new method and is explained here: [link= http://www.stopsmokingnaples.com ]http://www.stopsmokingnaples.com[/link]. They say this:
[blockquote]
A one time visit to our Doctorscan eliminate your urges and cravings to smoke. This treatment works where others fail because weadminister medications that go into effect immediatelyand block your urges and cravings to smoke.

Much like eating when you are hungry, the food goesdirectly to your stomach and stops the hunger. These medications go directly to the parts of the bodyaffected by nicotine and stop your cravings.
[/blockquote]
Whatever method you use, best wishes for a successful outcome!!!

RE: Cigarettes - how did you quit?

68 days!!!! i did my Reiki Masters and decided the time was right to give up so i did!! it was my 7 or 8th attempt in 17 years but this time i just wanted to do it FOR ME not because it was the right thing to do or i couldnt afford it etc...
i did use patches for the first few weeks then went out for the day and had forgot to put one on so that was that.
cold turkey wasnt pleasant after that and i have developed a bit of an eating compulsion but i can loose weight later on, i cant grow another pair of lungs and my kids cant grow a new mum!!
i can confidently say i will never smoke again (apart from anything i dont ever want to have to go through giving up again!!)
best thing ive ever done!!:)

Hi,

I gave up smoking several months ago.

Firstly I realised that is was part of my "identity" and was therefore a necessary part in keeping that "identity" in place. That "identity" had to go as it was time to move on. There was a fear attached to letting go of it but I was willing to take that risk (who's making the decisions around here, anyway? !!)

Secondly, I found that the desire to smoke was a kinesthetic thing and therefore had a location. In fact it had a direction too. It would start outside my body, down and to the left, then move towards me and upwards. Each time I experienced this feeling I just told it to "F**K Off". Took about a week before it realised that I was no longer interested. Now I don't even think about it unless I've had a couple of pints in which case I just use the same expletives! (switched to internal, of course).

Thirdly... It's possible to re-create the experience of having just had a cigarette. I got this idea from seeing stage hypnotist Robert Halpern in 1969 in Edinburgh when he was getting some Scottish lads totally on-the-floor drunk but with empty beer glasses. The principle being that, if you've had an experience, then it is possible to re-create it.

Yes, patches first then cold Turkey. Over a year ago now, gave up cigs so now need to give up eating as gained nearly 3 stone!... But seriously after this length of time I wonder why I didn't do it earlier. I think the answer lies in DECIDING WHEN IT IS RIGHT FOR YOU- WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO STOP AND NOT JUST STOP BECAUSE YOU FEEL YOU SHOULD. Will never smoke again. Can bear but dont like the smell of smoke. When I smell it on other people, I reaslise I must have smelt like that too!

I was a heavy smoker and gave up cigarettes immediately when i found out i was pregnant 7yrs ago and have never had the urge since.
Having kids was definately the best way for me to quit and the best reason for me to never be tempted to smoke again! 🙂

RE: Cigarettes - how did you quit?

Hi
I gave up smoking 22 years ago when I first got married. I went to a Hypnotist which cost me £30 which was a huge amount of money at the time.

I have not had a cigarette since so I guess it must have worked. I think the investment of £30 was a big factor because it sort of represented the fact that I must have been serious about stopping

Yup I know all about that one sunflowerseahorse, but as the new leaf lady said you would have to put on about 8 stone for it to be doing the damage that smoking was doing to your body![&:]

Take Care
