Just wondered if any of you have read this or any of his other books on giving up smoking - or perhaps someone has attended one of his seminars or his clinics? Maybe you are linked to one of the clinics as a therapist?

How did you all find the book? I've never smoked, but have family who suffered from smoking related illness, my father died of lung cancer and my mother of heart failure, which was brought on by damage during many years of smoking. As a non-smoker I found it a pretty easy read and on my travels reading up on this kind of thing for research in EFT I didn't have any surprises, although had I not done this research previously I would have found it quite groundbreaking.

The principles are very simple and clear, the important points are reinforced, there are no scare tactics.. merely bringing about some education and realisation for the smoker about how it can make them react in a certain way and that they do not need to do that anymore. It's the first book of it's kind that I've read but just wondered how actual smokers have found it.

Hi Gussie,

I did read this, but after i had been quit for around 3 months!! But I did find it reinforced my quit.

I know of a lot of the fellow quitters at ivequit used Allan carr, and would highly recommend it.

It really breaks down all the myths and the reasons us smokers used for justifying to continue to smoke.
You are meant to read it whilst still smoking, and then start your quit once you have finished reading.

Its a shame to hear that Alan is now facing his own cancer battle - its seems so unfair after helping so many, many people quit. Iam keeping him in my thoughts and wish him all the best.

Hi Gussie

I read it and have not smoked since, which was 12 years ago. So for me it worked a treat. A lot of my clients though, have read it and then come to see me to stop smoking because it didn't work for them.

All in all, I suppose, it depends on the individual as the book has just the one way of dealing with smoking cessation. The therapeutic techniques I use are the same as my colleagues and do vary according to the person attending, which is why we seem to be able to help the ones who Allen's book hasn't managed to sort out.

I won't mention the brand name of the technique I use as it would infringe the rules on advertising ;).

Hi
I used to be a 20-a-dayer and gave up really easily with Allen Carr. This was 4-years ago and since then have trained as an NLP practitioner and hypnotherapist and can recognise many of his techniques. But to a rooky back them, it seemed like a really straightforward and common sense approach to stopping smoking.

I would definitely recommend it to people.

My prayers are with Allen Carr himself.

I've read it but unfortunately for me it didnt help much I found it a bit patronising in places though I did recoginse all the excuses us smokers use not to stop smoking...........................
I've also tried hynotherapy but wasnt really comfortable with the therapist bit of a creep bloke but still parted with 150 quid.
I feel guilty every time I light a ciggie but still keep doing it.

RE: Alan Carr - Easy Way to Give Up Smoking

i started reading the allen carr book when id been given up for about 3 weeks i thought it was absolutely brill and id sit in bed reading bits to my hubby "OOOH listen to this bit ...... isnt it sooo true!!!!" yes it was great UNTIL.... i reached the chapter on replacements.
i was on patches i have tried to quit several times in my life and have tried cold turkey and decided that if i didnt want a divorce and for my children to run screaming from me then i was better off with nrt. i was getting on brilliantly and was sooo pleased with myself not a single craving in 3 weeks no depression nothing!! then i read that chapter and everything changed.
i felt guilty and a failure for "feeding the monster" with the patches not just that but for the chewing gum and the aniseed balls i was eating!!
so i went into a bit of a turmoil do i carry on scratching the itch (which had been going so well)or do i turn into b**ch from hell for a while. i started trying to leave my patches off to try without them but got so miserable both from withdrawal and the feeling of failure.
i turned from the odd chewing gum/ aniseed ballto compulsive eating through guilt!!

in the end i stuck to the patches for the course and came off them by accident when i was going to an eft course and forgot to put one on.(subconcious decision????)
i gave up smoking on june 1st this year and havent touched one since. im still eating way too much and have put on a stone in the last 8 weeks.this does botherme but i figure Ican always diet but i cant grow another lung!!
i will eventually finish the allen carr book. like i said i thought it was great until that chapter, everything you already knew as a smoker but brushed under the rug!

my advice is to definately read it and take what you want out of it but leave what you dont and if youre on nrt my opinion is that if it stops you putting those cancer sticks in your mouth and slowly poisoning yourself for the rest of your life and harming others around you [:'(]then whats the worry?
however you are giving up well done and stick at it its the hardest thing ive ever had to do and i can honestley say if theres one reason why i will never smoke again its so i will never have to give up again!!!!:D:D:D

RE: Alan Carr - Easy Way to Give Up Smoking

Steve you might need to whisper in a pm what that technique is cause I'd be interested.. I have to say as a non-smoker I found the book easy going, I've never smoked so it's a charmed life to read something like that knowing I don't have to go through it.

I have however seen a lot of people struggle and I know myself I put my family under a lot of pressure to give up over the years, which didn't work at all - not good. If I had been old enough to know about books like this and had read it, I might've understood more about what goes on with smoking.

The ideas and principles seem pretty cool to me and without all the scare tactics, ok, he mentions them fleetingly but then gets on with the rest, did like the approach, it was easy to read, yes repetition, seemed very American in delivery - but seems solid.

I am really glad some of you guys were able to give up as a result of it.. think the principles can be applicable really to any addiction.

RE: Alan Carr - Easy Way to Give Up Smoking

I have been off the cigarettes for 17 days without needing to buy or smoke any. The big problem i have found is trying to control an amazing amount of pent up frustration and anger.Where this has come from i am not sure, but it is very confusing.
Today, I bought a packet of cigarettes and started to smoke again. I had found myself shouting at my two children, 11 and 9, and decided that nothing was worth losing the trust and respect of my two darlings. I have sat them down and explained why i have started again.
I have also found that road rage has increased ten fold. No fisty cuffs or out of car rantings though. Other drivers just do everything wrong. (mind, saying that, I am male).
I will be exploring otheravailable therapies with which to beat this. Just because i'm down does not mean i'm out. I will have this licked yet.
Any info on reflexology or acupuncturewould be most appreciated.
Thankyou

RE: Alan Carr - Easy Way to Give Up Smoking

hi timothy
thats such a shame that youve gone back on the ciggies after youd done soooo well.
i know how hard it is and i know that the anger and frustration seems like it will never end and i know that you feel absolutely horrible for yelling at the kids and you feel its not fair to take it out on them.
ive been there. ive got twobabies same age as yours 9 and 11. ive done the excuses time and time again "its not fair ive become b**ch from hell and im taking it out on the kids id better start smoking again" but in the long term its worth it.
as for losing the respect and trust of your children do you honestly think that they respect you for smoking? do they respect you for poisoning the air and making everything around them smell including them? (Even if you dont smoke around them you are still breathing out poisonous fumes for an hour after having a ciggie and i presume you dont disappear for an hour before talking to them or hugging them)
do you think they trust you when you promise your going to give the cigs up? 😮

believe me im not belittleing what youre going through because ive been there. i only quit June 1st and its still a struggle at times and i still get a little grotty but what youre going through at this early stage DOES get better.
the anger and frustration is your body trying to make you have a ciggie its the little demon wanting you to scratch the itch. it WILL go it just needs time. [:@]

Whatever therapy you try you will get some sort of discomfort in some way. you are giving up a drug. would you expect a heroin addict to be able to quit simply and easily?? [&:]

im sure your children would rather have a grumpy narky daddy for a few weeks and him live to see their children and maybe even their childrens children than have a happy (or pretend happy because you will never be truly happy while you are a smoker and you are trying to fight it) daddy who could well drop dead of a heart attack at a young age or get lung cancer.
And remember your children WILL more likely than not lead by example. do you want them to smoke????[:'(]

you are better off sitting them down and explaining why you might be a grumpy old man for a while than explaining why you need to start smoking again. they will trust and respect you a lot more if you follow through what you say.

i know i sound like an old bossy boots but like i said ive been there and my daughter said to me the other day "mummy wishes do come true because i wished you and daddy would stop smoking and now you have " and the happiness i have brought to them (and the health as we all know how selfish us smokers are) is worth all the hard work and tears and frustration (and the stone in weight!!!)

Give it another go its sooo worth it in the end and i wish you all the luck in the world

Heya Timothy

I'd probably advise you look to EFT or Freeway CER for quitting, both are proven methods of stop smoking.. you just need a nudge to keep your motivation and resolution up.

So what, you started up again, for the last time, and now you canlook forward - it's a glitch in your progress, if it's shown you you are more balanced and happy without them, call it apleasant reminder.. focus on the here and now, how about this - today you become a non-smoker, for life.

Hello Tim,
Try again mate it's worth it. I did the Alan Carr book and picked a date and just stopped, I did find it hard for a couple of weeks and again at about 6-7 months, it's now nearly 3 years and I can't see myself ever smoking again (I hope), my Wife tryed Hypnotherapy and lasted about 6 weeks, however has not been back since (5 months ago) which is a great shame.
Like I said mate it really is worth it.
Good Luck

You are right no book can guide you to quit smoking in three week, those are telling might be they have willpower to quit but I think no one book is capable for this yes I have read that there are some medicine in the market that can help you and they also give you lot of tips: Identify the times you are most likely to smoke. For example, do you tend to smoke when feeling stressed? When you are out at night with friends? While you are drinking coffee? When you are bored? While you are driving? Etc” is doter lot of great ideas to quit smoking these all the things you can get on the net free then no need

RE: Alan Carr - Easy Way to Give Up Smoking

for me the book is and was not about keeping you in my resolution or giving me more willpower, but about actually showing that I DO NOT NEED A CIGARETTE. Which obviously leads to the fact that I don't need to use food to comfort myself (why should I comfort myself after I lost a heavy burden ?), I never had a case of worse mood (worse than without cigarettes, of course - it obviously happens), irritability (as above)...I actually noticed the change of taste of the foods and lovely smells in the air andmy own better smell....and even that I notice the techniques used to make me feel like that, I am quite happy that they work 🙂

hugs

x

PS. and it's not 'give up' smoking...it's 'quit', which doesn't imply that there is something to miss here 🙂 just a little thought:)

Yes there is a real tried and tested scientifically proven way if you want to give up smoking try hypnotherapy. You can stop in one session. You don't need to pay the earth, ask around for prices. Usually you recoup the cost in one month being smoking free, depends on how much you smoke.
If I recall Alan Carr still thought about smoking, with hypnosis you should feel as though you never smoked.
Good luck

I have had hypnotherapy and I still have some cravings and sometimes find myself thinking about smoking. I have never felt like I have never smoked either. I am sure that your statement is true for some people but by no means all!

At the end of the day the means to stop comes from within - everything else is merely a prop to support ones determination. I have spoken to a lot of ex-smokers and the vast majority would say that willpower alone is not enough but without it one will never give up.

I know many that have tried hypnotherapy and it did not work.

IMHO with any method you chose, you need will power/intention to stop.

okay it is true that not everybody will stop what ever method you use. Yes you need to want to stop but will power or using the conscious mind(about 7% effective - patches about 10%) will not work in the long term, that is why hypnosis is so effective it does not rely on the thinking bit of your mind.
Before hypnosis takes place it should be explained why you have had trouble in the past and why you will succeed. Hypnosis is a tool not a miracle cure. and if you don't want to stop then no poewer on earth will stop you. Plus if you have had or suffer from depression or anxiety your chances are much reduced, as smoking is an oral satisfaction like eating drinking and smoking. That is why people put on weight they replace smoking with another usually eating.
