Hi Neville, you're certainly not alone.

IBS is one of those general labels that doctors give to bowel complaints they don't understand... and the causes are 'unknown'.

However, there is a lot of work that has been done by Addenbrookes Hospital in researching IBS to try and categorise the different types and offer practical advise. There's a book written by one of the doctors there:

This will help you to identify the category of IBS you fall into, and offer solutions that can help for that category.

I'm sure you'll also get plenty of good advice here on the forums, especially from people like CarolineN who will be able to offer nutritional advise, of which IBS is typically related to.

Hi Neville

IBS is just as Giles described - an umbrella term for "I haven't a clue what is wrong with your gut, but I realise it is upset" !!!

There are an awful lot of people given this diagnosis - it is very common indeed and there are a number of reasons why. Partly from the use of antibiotics which knock out the beneficial gut bacteria; other medication can cause damage to the gut wall including over the counter painkillers; intestinal bugs picked up from abroad (and here) can cause damage; stress is singularly unhelpful to gut problems; food intolerances and allergies; Candida infections; and so on. In fact it can be started by one thing and another kicks in and you can get a cascade of different problems which needs careful sorting out.

Another good book to read Lipski's Digestive Wellness - she also helps you work your way through the problems with a series of questionnaires. Very useful! And she tells you how you can start to sort things out.

There's quite a lot of info if you look in the forums on digestive disorders - look back there are quite a few pages to scroll through, and lots of discussion.

If you would like to see a highly qualified Nutritional Therapist who specialises in this sort of problem then I can PM you with that info (Harrogate or York), but you can look here too.

Do come back if you have more questions, but whatever, let us know how you get on.

Ibs

Hi Neville,

Although I do not have IBS or know of any support groups for this near Durham, I have helped some IBS sufferers by giving them reflexology. It is certainly not a quick fix but with regular sessions reflexology can certainly help.

Have you tried reflexology?

Good luck & do take care.

I live in Birmingham and I have IBS - luckily not severe but it is very annoying. It is a bit of a 'catch all' but the term 'irritable' in the medical sense means over reactive. And the gut of an IBS sufferer does just that. It overreacts to certain trigger foods.

I don't know of any support groups - but hypnotherapy can be very helpful if pain is one of the major symptoms. (Thankfully it isn't one of mine)

As both a pharmacist and a hypnotherapist I know about possible helpful techniques and drugs - but stress is a large factor .

Hey there Neville,

IBS is very common indeed. Unfortunately there is no one definitive cure.

There are plenty of self-help treatments available though. These can definitely improve symptoms.

The IBS Network website is definitely worth a look and they have information on support groups. [DLMURL="http://www.theibsnetwork.org/selfhelp.asp"]IBS Network | Self help - IBS help - IBS society - IBS group - IBS support[/DLMURL]

Good luck 🙂

It could be worth investigating low FODMAP diets. My husband has IBS and we heard about it via the TV programme, The Food Hospital - it has made a big difference to him.

I've had this (I assume) for years. Very bad at getting proper diagnosis.

My form is having to rush to the toilet not the other way round i.e. constipation.

I tried to find out dietery causes and found apples bad if eating more than say half a day.

What was a total revelation though was when I looked at what I had everyday. Of course this may not apply to you. I used to take 1000mg of Vitamin C, it's good for you right? Not in my case. I know they said it could cause diarrhoea but didn't really believe it. Anyway stopped taking it and soooo much better.

Cannot say my bowel is completely `normal` but at least I can go out without constant worry I might get caught short.
