weight gain on thyroxine for hypothyroidism

I was directed to this website's forums as it has some posts by people suffering from weight gain while on thyroxine for hypothyroidism...Just wondering whether anyone else has connected the two? I am going up and up and up and it's getting me down:confused:

I am on thyroxine having had my thyroid removed. I knw my T4 levels are in the normal range - but I now have far more problems with my weight than I used to . My BP cholesterol etc are all fine, I am not diabetic so the weight isn't causing health problems.

For me that is the main thing. I eat a healthy diet, I exercise so I am healthy. I look at my curves and remember Reubens would have thought I was the epitome of beauty!

Yes there IS a link - I don't think all people fit into the 'normal' range of T4 levels and in any case just giving T4 may not suit everyone. Some need T3 as well. But having run on high T4 levels for a time I wouldn't want to back there. I am way too fond of sleeping!! Talk to your GP or consultant about your concerns - but the answer may not be as simple as just increasing your dose of Thyroxine.

I agree with Sally, you need to go back to your doctor if you have concerns.

Typically, people with underactive thyroids have a slower metabolism, so weight is more easliy put on, and taking thyroxine meds would usually help with that.
However, there are many factors involved, and your doctor should look at all those factors (or send you to a consultant who can).

This problem is easily resolved by yogic mudras.
Two mudras are usually prescribed for hypothyroid.
First one is pran mudra. Which is joining the tips of thumb with ring finger and pinky.
Pran is vital breath. It will energise the body with vital breath(prana). There are various side benefits of this mudra such as clearing of eye problems, clarity of mind, enhanced energy.

Second mudra is Ling mudra. Ling mudra is especially beneficial for raising the fire element in body, lowering cholesterol, excess fat, excess bodily secretions such as catarrh, mucous etc. this one is especially used to balance the hypo (diminished functioning of) thyroid gland.
Method-Clasp the fingers of both hands, palms touching, one thumb resting over the other.

How to do mudras?
Find a comfortable sitting posture and hold the mudra for small period of time, say 10 minutes to begin with. Your hand may tire out easily but it soon gets over that as the energy begins to shift and balance. The mudras are usually held for 45 minutes altogether daily. Breaking it into 3x15 minutes, if you so desire.
Best time may be while you are watching telly.
Do it for a 12-18 weeks and the problems are sorted from root. Can carry on for longer if it is not entirely gone..do it lovingly.

Precautions for ling mudra
1 As it raises the fire element in body, it is vital to drink ample water
2. As it melts away clogged fat in arteries, and body in general, you would need to consume butter ( not margarine please!)

Do these two mudras religiously and with trust and open heart and reap the benefits.
I wanted to add images of these two mudras but for my amazing IT skills, I leave it to you to google them:)

If enough of us knew about self help potential of yogic practices, there will be very little use for pills and therapy.

Sally, you are on thyroxine and managing it well except the weight...have I got that right?
If yes, then do ling mudra and do another one called Shunaya mudra. The method is to hold ring finger under the thumb. It is good for losing weight. Prana mudra should vitalise anyone, it does not have contra indications.
My cousin had her thyroid removed in her mid twenties.... Weight is always a slight problem with that, to keep the metabolism high can be tricky. Perhaps search mudras for raising metabolism see what ones up.

Certainly Jnani's advice may help a lot, and I'm all for sorting things without resorting to pills. Well worth a try - and I should do this myself too as things aren't going right for me either just now, but that's another problem.

I would ask your doctor to test you for T3 levels. Thyroxine is the inactive form of hormone from the thyroid gland and your body needs to convert it into the active form of tri-iodothyronine (T3). There are several co-factors needed to do this in the body including selenium, zinc, calcium, magnesium, manganese, boron and iron. If your body is short of these micronutrients then the conversion can struggle to happen, and the thyroxine is converted into reverse T3, if at all. Reverse T3 is the so-called end product of thyroid function. Meanwhile your T4 levels look fine but your body struggles to function properly. Too much fluorine (toothpaste and tea) will inhibit conversion as will too high levels of iron and high cortisone in the body. It is all a very complex equation. If you wish to find out more have a look at [url]this book [/url]which explains so much about thyroid problems which are so very poorly supported or understood in this country.

Your doctor is unlikely to agree to have you tested for low nutrient levels but this can be assessed by a [url]Registered Nutritional Therapist[/url] who is trained to assess nutrient levels and advise accordingly. It can also be other things that are causing the weight gain and these would need to be looked at too.
