Hi CR,

I gotta say it sounds like one from the number of studies Leonardo da Vinci did that will have titles like Madonna, Madonna & Child, Mary & Christ Child, St Anne and the young St. John or the Virgin, St Anne & ... etc

I dunno who 'sjDey' is but the 1491 is the right timing-ish if it's supposed to be a date LdV... from your description though that's what it sounds like (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it):o.

Probably best if you could take a photo of it and post it... I reckon HPers will nail it quick then?

Hi CR, I dunno if you've lost interest in the answer, but if you still want to know, you could use your MS Paint, or one of your picture editors to reduce size - or even easier ask a mod via PM, the guys will probably reduce and post it for you?

Gotta say though the more I think about your discription, the more it sounds like one of the studys for paintings like 'The Virgin of the Rocks' or similar by LdV

Hi crystal_rose,

I assume you have taken a digital image and captured it to your PC.

Now I am running the Windows 2000 Professional and hence my comments will apply to that or earlier or different operating systems (like ubuntu for example). If you are running Windows XP or vista, you might have more advanced facilities at your disposal.

But with Win2k, or earlier versions of Windows, you could proceed thus:

1. Use the software supplied with your digicam to process the image. I know that canon, for example supply excellent software with their cameras.

or

2. Use 3rd party software. Among the reasonably priced commercial ones, the Corel Paint shop pro is probably best.

But there are many free programs which should do the job you want very well. Among them the best is probably,
Irfanview, which you can download for free here

Download and install it. Then open your image with it and then resize it or crop it to whatever size you want. Very, very simple and free.

You can find the original size by right-clicking on the image file and clicking on properties.

Then bring it down to a size like 400 w 300 high. or so.

In Irfanview you can choose a % keeping the original proportions unchanged.

So if the original was 2560 x 1920

select 15% to make it 384 x 288 . done.

Full instructions are in the help files included.

Save the image in its smaller size,

Upload to your chosen hosting site,

then link it to your post.

Done.

Next stop, Tiffany's.

All the best.

Blimey CR,
answered your first description & I couldn’t’ve hit the nail any squarer (is that a word?) on the head if I’d been the artist myself ...& not even a “well done” or virtual pat on the back from you… you only had to put my answer into google images and you’da seen it… Hmmff!,
I’m taking my ball home :(:dogrun:

😉

Aah yes, one of those wonderful enigmatic "cartoons" (real meaning) by Leonardo that has a whole host of codes within. This was considered heretical as it depicts Anne telling Mary that her boy (John) was the true messiah - hence the finger pointing upwards which was code for "John the Baptist - the true messiah" - also used by the Templars - and these followers were known as Johannites.

Beautiful picture isn't it?

Yeah, i used to have a lovely print of it hanging because of that very reason and my fascination with that whole conspiracy, period and LdV himself (as you know) - but I took it down after a few years as I kept spotting more and more hidden strokes and hidden artwork that depicted or suggested stuff that seemed a little inappropriate IYKWIM - Probably just me and my warped mind eh:o

Sue, I don't know what you're taking as the real meaning of 'cartoon' but it's actually the drawing which is used as the basis for either a mural or a tapestry. 'Cartoon' comes from the Italian 'cartone' meaning paper. The sketch lines were pricked and soot or something brushed thru to give the outline on the wall or tapestry or whatever. The word 'cartoon' doesn't denote hidden codes as such.

Hi Sunanda, I wasn't actually saying cartoon meant or denoted hidden codes. I have a book on Leo and there is a section entitled "Cartoons" which shows all of his sketches (including the one above) drawn on "cartones".

Sorry, Sue, I misread your post. This particular cartoon is in the National Gallery. It's very lovely. Venetian was on another thread just the other day talking about how John the Baptist was Jesus' guru.

sorry for the confusion Sunanda, on reading back it was written awkwardly. Indeed, yes it is in the Nat Gallery as is my favourite of all Leo's paintings, the Virgin on the Rocks, I believe there are some more of his cartoons in the V&A which are worth a peak.
