How to choose the right massage

If you’re thinking about going for a massage and either it’s your first time, you haven’t been for a while, or you’re simply looking for something different, then read on for a short guide to the different types of massage and how to find the right one for you.

Sporting injuries and muscle ache

Tight muscles as a result of sport are common, as are mild sporting injuries. Specialist sports massages can really help with this as your masseuse will understand what is going on at a muscular level and can talk through areas of concern with you. Swedish massage, sometimes known as deep tissue massage, is another great choice. This kind of massage really gets down to the underlying muscle problems rather than just giving you a nice back rub. Hot stone massage is also a good choice if you have a lot of tight muscles as the stones work as extensions of the therapist’s hands and the heat helps muscles relax and speeds up the process of relieving tension.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy requires a special kind of massage, and you need to make sure you go to a therapist who is qualified to deliver pregnancy massage. Of course, you cannot lie on your front whilst pregnant, so pregnancy massages normally take place as you lie on your side or in a specifically designed seat and head rest. Pregnancy massage helps with the general aches and pains that occur during pregnancy, but they also calm any nerves and tension you may have about childbirth.

Anxiety & stress

The best sort of massage for improved mental health is an aromatherapy massage. Your qualified masseuse will talk you through the choice of essential oils to determine which is best for your symptoms. Those suffering from stress which also results in muscle ache from physical tension could also benefit from a hot stone, deep tissue or Swedish massage.

Posture and joint issues

Thai massage is quite different to the massages outlined above. You remain fully clothed, no oil is applied and the massage is given on the floor rather than the table. As well as massaging you, the practitioner will also put you in different yoga and ayurvedic positions, ironing out joint problems and improving your balance and posture.

As you can see, there are many different types of massage. You can also speak to your therapist about choosing the right one for you. To find a masseuse, have a look at our directory.
